Abstract

The main objectives of this study was to isolate and screening of the fungi for the production of GLA which can be further used to large industrial scale production of GLA form microbial sources. Gamma-linolenic acid, (GLA: cis-6, cis-9, cis-12- octadecatrienoic acid) is an omega-6 fatty acid found in Oenothera bierunis, Borago officinalis, Ribes nigrum and fungi mainly in the division Phycomycetes. GLA is extersively used in diabetes, Sjogren’s syndrome, osteoporosis, menopausal symptom, premenstrual syndrome (PMS), allergic rhinitis, rheumatoid arthritis, attension deficit/ hyperactivity disorder (ADHD),alcoholism, cancer, weight loss, high blood pressure, heart disease and ulcers.
