Abstract

The depletion ground water table is one of pressing problems of India. Recent reports of central ground water board shows a grim-situation of the ground water depletion. The present paper examines the declining trends of ground water in various states located in the indo-gangetic plain of northern India. This situation is caused by over exploitation of ground water ground water by using the flood irrigation, operated by the tube wells. The present study is based on secondary data, taken from the Ministry of Water Resources. On the basis of regional analysis which shows an alarming situation in some of the states such as Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh and some of states located in southern India which indicate a great threat to the agricultural, industrial and human consumption with rapid growth of population of the country. The objectives of the study are mainly aimed at review the ground water scenario in different parts of India with special reference to southern Haryana. Lastly, there are some of preventive and curative methods which are to used to prevent rapidly growing depletion of water in different parts of India, as well as southwestern parts of Haryana, so that a sustainable development position of ground water may be attained by making a judicious use of water for present and coming periods.
