EFFECT OF NOISE POLLUTION ON EGG LAYING AND HATCHING PERCENTAGE OF DYSDERCUS KOENIGII

Abstract

The effect of noise pollution on egg laying and hatching percentage of Red cotton bug or Dysdercus koeingii. Experiments were conducted to evaluate the number of egg laying and hatching percentage. The insect were exposed to sound 10db power. This is the initial dose as seen by the weight of insect. An insect were treated for 1 hr. daily and this was done for 3 days and then killed after 24 hr, 48 hr, 72 hr, 96 hr. The number of eggs laid by the treated female D.koenigii for both the batches were noted. The number of eggs that hatched out from those laid by treated female after mating was noted after exposure of 48hrs, 72hrs and 96hrs of post treatment respectively. It was observed that normal female laid 119 eggs in I batch and 113 eggs in II batch under laboratory condition. When exposed for 48hr. eggs in I batch was 71 eggs and II batch was 64 eggs. In 72 hrs of exposure in I batch 40 eggs and II batch was 32 eggs. 96 hrs. exposure I batch has 12 egg and II batch was 7 egg. Hatching percentage of eggs was found to decrease considerably after exposure of noise. In a batch of eggs laid by a control female D. koenigii young ones emerged from 94.66% of the eggs. After 48hrs. it was 60% ,after 72hrs. it was 30% and hatching percentage decrease upto 8% only at 96hrs.
