THE CLASS SIZE EFFECT IN TERTIARY EDUCATION : AN EXPLORATIVE STUDY

Abstract

The undergraduate enrolment has increased by manifested in last ten years. In the same period the post graduate enrolment also risen dramatically. The class size effect study at the Higher Education or college level is very much limited comparing the studies at the secondary and primary level. At the school level the class size is more or less fixed by the respective research.Hanushek(2003) and Krueger(2003) suggested that the profession not yet reached a consensus estimate of the impact of class size on student performance. Research on this at the college level is much more limited. This is surprising since the range of college class size are much more than the range of primary and secondary class sizes. At many institutions class size varies from within ten to more than 100 students. Although tertiary education may involve more self learning than primary or secondary education, so class size is solidly at the top of the policy agenda and concerns of both faculty and students.
