Abstract

India is the land of villages and about 84% of population of Odisha lives in villages. The villages have very poor socio economic conditions. Therefore, rural connectivity becomes very vital to bring about socio economic changes in Odisha which is in the emerging stage of development. The objective of this paper is to make an analytical hallucination of the trend, growth and various critical hindrances of rural road transport in Odisha. Besides, it highlights the role of the various schemes like PMGSY and rural connectivity through Bharat Nirman. It has been found that there has been progress of rural road length in Odisha. However, the state is far behind many other states. There is no gainsaying the fact that a number f programmes have been implemented for road development in Odisha in recent years. We have failed to cover the targeted number of habitations. The paper, therefore, argues the case for implementing a long term rural development plan. If it can be materialized properly, then there would be phenomenal growth in road development in Odisha for eradicating poverty and ensuring better quality of life of the rural people
