Abstract

Banking is always considered as a clean, high-tech service industry with minimal environmental impacts, but it is not the truth. The banks may impact environment directly and indirectly. Banks play a vital role in mobilizing financial resources across the economy by providing capital for large-scale infrastructure and low carbon technology deployment. On a global scale, many of the world’s leading banks have established lending policies themselves and followed different voluntary guidelines for socially responsibility and environmental sustainability in banking industry. Several banks are putting in place policies to reduce the footprint of their electrical energy consumption by smart lighting and replacement of inefficient appliances. The aim of this paper is to study the present scenario of green banking services in India, its responsibility towards society, sustainable development and protection natural environment. It also made an attempt to analyze the steps taken by different banks for implementing eco-friendly policies.
