Abstract
Epistemology comes from the Greek words epistēmē which means knowledge and logy, study/science. In Sanskrit, tattvamimamsa it is a study or theory of the nature of grounds of knowledge especially with reference to its limits and validity. It addresses questions like, what is knowledge, how is knowledge acquired, to what extent is it possible for a given subject or entity to be known. Much of the debate in this field is focused on analysing the nature of knowledge and how it relates to truth, belief and justification. Another perennial concern in this field is 'scepticism' in the sense that there is little knowledge acquired (empirically) or no knowledge at all. This field is sometimes known as the Theory of Knowledge.
