Abstract

Development is a continuous and a multidimensional process which involves reorganisation and reorientation of the entire economic and social system. UNESCO's concept of development is based on the realisation that communities define themselves in terms of cultural identities and development cannot be effective unless it is centred on that image. Thus, when one tries to examine the kaleidoscope of tribal development, it becomes important to understand the concept of tribe, which is of course, contextual to their image. The tribals in India, as is well known, are the indigenous people, in the sense that they had long settled in different parts of the country before the Aryan-speaking people penetrated India to spread over large parts of the country along the river valleys. These tribals had to move gradually from the plain areas to more inaccessible regions of forest,
