Abstract

The effect of some physical properties of 10 varieties of stored maize grains (Zea mays,L) was examined on the rate of infestation of Sitophilus zeamais Motsch. and Corcyra cephalonica Stainton. The hardness of grain ranged from 21.25 to 27.50 kg/grain in different maize varieties. The minimum hardness was found in Shweta, whereas, it was maximum in Chandramani. The moisture content ranged from 11.25 to 13.89 percent being maximum in Shweta and minimum in Chandramani. Varieties having higher moisture content and little hardness registered high infestation; while those having lower moisture content and maximum hardness had less infestation. The color of the grains was variable in different varieties but it had no effect on the development and infestation of the pests. The hardness of the maize grains showed a negative correlation coefficient with loss in weight and percentage of damaged grains, whereas the moisture content exhibited a positive correlation.
