Abstract

Indian urban population continues to be exposed to poor air quality. New Delhi is among one of the top polluted cities in the world. In fact out of twenty most polluted cities in the world ten are in India. The pollution levels in such cities are alarming. As sixth largest market for automobiles in the world growing tail pipe emissions is a major concern. Persuading motorists to purchase the cleanest vehicles on the market could, over time, make an important contribution to improving urban air quality. All new vehicles have to pass an emissions test before they can be sold or registered, still there can be a large difference in the exhaust emissions between vehicles using different fuels and emission control techniques. Providing consumers with an easy to understand information on a car’s emissions performance by using an ‘eco-label’ could help them differentiate between the emissions of different make and models.
