Abstract

Karnad, in his Hayavadana and Nagamandala, has depicted the clash between the traditions of society and the sexual desire in human life. In his plays he has explored situations in which a person, though married, finds himself/herself unable to fulfill his/her sexual desires. In both the plays we have two women, who not getting their sexual fulfillment, venture out the bonds of marriage to satiate it. However, both have to come face to face with the overpowering traditions of society. This struggle becomes all the more striking when a male is given excessive latitude in matters of sexuality while a woman has to pass through numerous ordeals to prove her chastity at every step.
