Abstract

Mercury is a heavy metal that produces toxicity even in small doses. Mercury and its compounds are used in laboratories, dental clinics, hospitals, and factories involved in the production of fluorescent lamps and batteries. Workers in these jobs are exposed to mercury vapours. Mercury is poisonous in elemental, organic and inorganic forms. Mercury poisoning can occur due to consumption of fish, breathing contaminated air, eating food containing mercury residues from processing, exposure to mercury vapour from amalgam fillings, cosmetics, disposal of mercury spills and improper disposal of compact fluorescent lamps and batteries.
