Abstract

Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is an endocrine and metabolic disorder which affects up to 17% of women worldwide making it the most common endocrine disorder among women of reproductive age. Women with PCOS are diagnosed based on having at least 2 of the 3 Rotterdam criteria, including: (1) anovulation or irregular menstrual cycles, (2) excess androgen hormones, and/or (3) polycystic ovaries on ultrasound. In addition to affecting reproduction, PCOS also lends to many metabolic consequences, namely insulin resistance, obesity and an increased risk of type 2 diabetes.
