Abstract

Plants are rich source of antibacterial components. Different plant extracts are being used in daily life to combat bacterial and fungal infections. Various extracts (Chloroform, ethyl acetate, ethanol and water) of Bougainvillea spectabilis and P. guajava were screened for their phytochemical constituents and also investigated for their antimicrobial activities. Phytochemical screening of extracts revealed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, phlobatannins and terpenoids. All extracts of B. spectabilis and P. guajava inhibited the growth of few of the bacterial and fungal strains tested with varied effectiveness. The maximum antibacterial activities were observed in ethanol and water extracts. Thus the bioactive natural products in extracts of Bougainvillea spectabilis and P.guajava can be used in the development of new pharmaceuticals that address unmet therapeutic use. Their antimicrobial potency was assessed by the presence or absence of inhibition zones and zone diameters (mm).Their methanol and acetone extracts showed comparable activity against the fungal strains; the best antifungal activity was showed by the hexane extract. It is possible that isolating the active compound or compounds will provide better fungicide activity.
