INTERNET USAGE PATTERNS AMONG MALES AND FEMALES STUDENTS AT COLLEGES OF BHIWANI CITY: A SURVEY

Abstract

The Internet is rapidly becoming part of everyday life and empowering people in all part of the globe. There is no reliable data on the patterns of usage of Internet among males and females in a small city of third world country. A survey of usage of Internet was undertaken with a convenience sampling method of data collection from the field. The sample of the present investigation was students of various colleges in the Bhiwani city, because students are regarded as trends setter. The data of the survey based on 477 respondents were analyzed by descriptive statistical techniques such as frequencies/percentages and means. Analysis indicates that majority of males and females were well aware of terms ICT and Internet. Based on data, it was observed that males use Internet more, stay for longer duration on Internet and visit sites more number of times. As for the type of service utilize, majority of the respondents used Internet for social communication and educational material followed by recreational purpose. Males considered Internet more beneficial than females. Data also revealed that males used Internet more for e-shopping. Findings of the study were discussed in the light of earlier researches and suggestions for further probe were also stated.
