Solanum xanthocarpum is commonly known as Yellow berried night shade. Plant is found throughout India mainly at dry and waste lands as weed along roadsides. Solanum xanthocarpum is a medicinal herb widely used in Ayurvedic Medicines. Whole plant of Solanum xanthocarpum Schrad and Wendl is regarded as one of the most important plant species in traditional system of medicine. Plant contains alkaloids, phenolics, flavanoids, sterol and saponins. Medicinal value of the plant is mainly due to presence of alkaloids, mainly, solasodine and solasonine .Various studies indicates that plant possesses anti-asthmatic, anti-hyperglycemic, antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. The present review is an attempt to compile the available information and research work done to evaluate the medicinal values of the plant. This review covers about the traditional use and the medicinal importance of the plant.
