Abstract

The conservation status and distribution of the Indian Sarus Crane antigoneantig one Linn. was studied in Lakh Bahosi bird sanctuary, Indergarh, District Kannauj, Uttar Pradesh, India for a period of one year between July 2016 and June 2017. On the completion of the year a total of 537 cranes were recorded in three transects set up across sanctuary area. Cranes were recorded in all the transects. Transect II which runs along the length of lake Bahosi recorded maximum cranes, as we discovered that this area of the lake acts as a major roosting ground for Sarus cranes of the area during summer months. Lakh Bahosi bird sanctuary and the surrounding areas are an ideal habitat for Sarus cranes, the lakes of the sanctuary are very important, as they serve as the last refuge for the cranes of the area during summers when most other water bodies dry up. We suggest maintaining water level during summer months by pumping water into the lakes and regular monitoring of the Sarus Crane population in the area.
