Abstract

The pathogenic species of intestinal system pose a threat to the society due to the risk involved. The Salmonella infections cause a global toll of more than 700000 per year. The disease is more in developing countries than developed. The disease symptoms appear and demand for urgent intervention with the antibiotic therapy. The classical methods for the identification take more time for establishment of cause of the disease. Various rapid and discriminatory techniques used for identification of pathogen have been discussed in the present review viz., plasmid analysis, PCR based identification, random amplified polymorphic DNA, amplified fragment length polymorphism, restriction fragment length polymorphism, pulsed field gel electrophoresis, multilocus sequence typing and ribotyping.
