Abstract

The existing street lighting systems employ constant illumination which makes for up to 60% of total municipal expenditure on electricity. At present, street lights are controlled manually and it leads to energy loss. In the proposed smart street lighting system, the street lights turn on to 100% intensity automatically when vehicles or pedestrians are detected by the sensor module. The streetlight has a Solar Panel mounted on top of it along with four LDRs and two DC motors which detects the intensity of sunlight and move the solar panel in the direction of maximum solar intensity to convert solar energy into electrical energy. The electrical energy is stored to utilize it later in the night time. This system is designed to detect vehicle movement to switch on light at 100% and at other times, keep lights at minimum intensity to save energy. Thus, when there are no vehicles on the highway, then all the lights remain at minimum brightness. Pairing this system with a dual axis solar tracking system results in the lighting system become self sufficed. The lighting system will produce its own energy in the day time and utilize it efficiently in the night time.
