Abstract

The term shadow banking is viewed as a network of non-banking financial intermediaries that offer services comparable to those offered by regular commercial banks but are not subject to banking laws. It is made up of a broad group of organisations and marketplaces that perform conventional banking activities as a whole. The shadow banking system is critical to the economy because it supplies funding to regular banks. Without this funding, traditional banks would be unable to lend money, slowing overall economic development. The phrase "shadow banking" refers to operations such as maturity and liquid transformation, credit extension, and risk transfer that take place partially or entirely outside of the regular banking system.
